The Battery Directive was published in September 2006 and became law in 2008. The directive sets portable battery collection targets of 25% by 2012 rising to 45% by September 2016. Some batteries contain various hazardous metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, zinc, manganese and lithium. It can be damaging to the environment to send these to landfill, burning batteries can also cause atmospheric pollution. |
